Dub dislocates the normal operation of sound within music, space is created, energised precisely by rhythm, interpolated by seemingly random sounds. Bass is pushed forward from it's sometimes invisible position in the mix, becomes the prominent feature, the axis upon which all other objects rotate. Drum rhythm spliced, cut, deviating from forward motion, tangible in the heavy atmosphere the bass creates.
It's a science in the oldest manifestation of that word; alchemical, sleight of hand, what you think you hear, perhaps you did not really hear. Perhaps you hear things not actually present. 'A third mind always walks along with you.' Trace information trails out from Lee Scratch Perry, King Tubby, Bim Sherman, out into free jazz, Burroughs cut-ups, Laswells collisions in space-time.
To dislocate is to present some 'other' point of focus. But a point that is unstable and shifts without warning. Suddenly we see from a position rarely held, and only momentarily held. The 'discourse' changes to accommodate the dislocation, the irruption as Foucault would say (or wouldn't say.)
Of all human properties that require dislocation language is the most important. It is language that mediates the world. If language resides and is delimited by powerful organisations our vision of the world is also limited and controlled. Information is not necessarily the primal force, because information is mediated by language. Information is what someone else tells you it is. The very notion of Western Supremacy is based purely in the use of language. It is not dependent on information because the information to hand does not support the notion of Western Supremacy at all. What creates the illusion of the supremacy is language and who is allowed to use it.
This is cyclical. You can use language only if you use the language designated appropriate. Therefore a speaker adopts the proscribed language that allows him to speak. You do not get into a position of power if you use the incorrect language. And once you have gained a position of power you will not relinquish it by suddenly using inappropriate language. You will continue to justify and maintain the form of language that got you into power in the first place. Dislocating appropriate language is a direct attack on power, because power requires stability. Not necessarily in the sphere of action. Instability is in many cases a desirable situation for powerful agencies. But what they do require is stability in representation. And this is achieved by limiting the areas of discourse to appropriate and controlled functions.
